Please Support The Project If You Are Feeling The Trailer

CMYK_KOB_FINAL_FILM_72DPI

Thank you for all the support, Breakbeat Lou, Marlon Williams, Eric Orr, Too Tuff and Ray West my dear friends who really went out and blogged the hell out of this.

I have received a lot of messages asking me when will this film will come out.  There is still a lot to do and shoot, I missed a lot of people out there due to my short time in NYC.  As many of you probably could see, there is real scope here to in creating a timeless piece.

Unlike most films, this film was not funded or made by a production company.  I am regular person living not in London but just outside Birmingham City.  I work in a factory and have a passion for this culture, to do this to this has cost me more than you will ever know.

Thank fully, if it was not for the support and respect for my work from the many greats that took part, this could never happen.  If it was not for Jazzy Jay that took me under his wing after seeing how I live for himself we would not be able to document the many true artists featured.

To complete this film will take another trip to NYC.  I’m selling limited edition poster art by Chris Malbon to raise the much needed funds.  If you would like to see this film completed please support the project and purchase a Poster. Shipping Day 30th August.

P.S  if you are finding any problems with the store, please let me know.

Exclusive Trailer for : King of the Beats – ‘Looking for the Perfect Beat’

Here is a exclusive preview of the trailer for the upcoming film by Pritt Kalsi, Jazzy Jay and JFK Aman.  Currently still in post production.  Im very excited about this film as anyone can imagine, but anyone who knows me and my work will know that this is a make or break moment.

In August 2012  Jazzy Jay spent a month here with me in the UK.  I was not in the best of state that time. Thanks to him and others who know who they are, he helped guiding me into recovery.  I started to see that I had to make some serious changes in my life.

After speaking with my family Jazzy  openly invited me to NYC to work on this project.  Leaving me to my own devices he assured me what ever I need to do he will help me achieve it.  Along side him and DJ Supreme from group Hijack I presented my idea and got the green light off them both.  I approached my friends in NYC,  the true masters, pioneers and producers of classic material and asked if they would take on the king of the beats challenge.

Filmed in Mecca New York birth place of Hip Hop.  I would like to thank Steven Ellington and Andy Higgs for believing in me, taking time out their schedule, spending their own money to travel to New York to help me make this, I believe it was worth it.  I didn’t know anything about sites like Kickstarter, this film was made able by the people who supported my art, buying prints, supporting my campaign that I went on early this year.  I would like to thank Aidan Butler my childhood friend who I bumped into in NYC after leaving the Marley Marl show, who helped us out when we had problems with one of our cameras, who offered support to the project and donated some film.  Jazzy Jays Wife who allowed me and the team into their home.  Marley Marl, Diamond D and Lord Finesse who have always given me time in NYC and UK allowing me the freedom to shoot them when ever.  Zion for putting us up!.  Phat Gary for his support and guidance, Biggest Gordon my old time friend who I was trying to find and bumped into in the street. A.GEE for the serious talk.

Unlike most films out there, this is a film made by someone still working in a factory who has passion and drive for telling a story about the culture he loves unmatched to others.  Almost 20 years and still grinding.  After making the trailer I could see the potential and power within this film. We spent 3 weeks in NYC shooting and didn’t get to shoot everyone we wanted due to schedules and even some people being carted off by the law.

Hence releasing the artwork by Chris Malbon yesterday.  If you watch this and believe in this project. Please support the campaign and purchase a print. Look out for Art coming from legendary graff artist Eric Orr who also features in the film.   To all those that took part and supported the project, those that believed in me I would like to thank you.  Real recognize the real.

Thanks to Chieko who flew over from Japan to watch me make the trailer.  5th Element who earlier today premiered the trailer in Japan.

Those that know, or experienced  what is King of the beats will know this more than a film its a movement based on a love and passion for music. Much love and respect to all the artists and friends that are part of this project

Exclusive Poster Artwork. Limited Edition – You Gonna Get Yours ?

CMYK_KOB_FINAL_FILM_72DPIDesigned and created by long time collaborator and friend Chris Malbon, here is a first exclusive look at the movie poster created by one of ‘Creative Magazines’ top 10 global creatives.  This is the first run of the poster and limited to 100 prints only.  Signed by the Artist Chris Malbon and Film Director Pritt Kalsi.  A2 printed on 120GSM Bond.  Money raised will go into finishing up the film and shooting missing scenes.

I remember the many phones calls me and Chris had discussing the new look KING OF THE BEATS, It was after I returned from NYC and spoke to Chris detailing my experience out there, he was inspired and came up with this design.  Inspired by Bed stuy, Brooklyn home base for me and the film crew, Andy Higgs and Steven Ellington.  He looked at the pictures we brought back of shop fronts, signs, streets and buildings, his aim was to capture the spirit of Hip Hop Culture and our time in the states.

We spent one day together having a meeting , brainstorming and planning where we wanted to go with this design.  Not following suit, artistically we wanted to present something new and fresh, injecting a little creativity and spirit into this culture we love so much.  Just as Neville Brody made waves with his work for Depeche Mode and others, this is what we are trying to achieve and translate here into Hip Hop.  Chris showed me some sketches he had made of buildings, alongside some of the current projects he was working on.  Left to his own devices Chris returned to Bristol producing this fine piece of art.

Tomorrow August 9th, is the day of the premier of our film trailer for the movie.  To coincide with the launch day we are releasing this poster.  If you are lover and supported of the culture and art and film making, please feel free to support the team, and purchase a poster.  Shipping day August 30th.

I would like to thank everyone for their support.

From the oldest memeber of the KOTB team. Chris Malbon

From the oldest memeber of the KOTB team. Chris MalbonVery few people in my circle or those who follow the king of the beats know much about this man Chris Malbon.  You may find it a surprise to discover that apart from my self he is the longest serving member of the team.  From its very conception he is responsible for the web design, logo designs and branding.

We go way back, I met Chris in first school, my earliest memories of him was that we used to have drawing competitions at break time to see who was the better artist.  Those days I would say I won, I’m hoping Chris will agree.  We had a passion for art, some might say a gift for it.  I was one year above him at school and when Hip Hop arrived I quickly got caught up in it.

Because of my older brother who was into comic books, I would spend hours copying the images from Marvel Comics and the characters of R.Crumb this then manifested in me then becoming a graffiti artist.  Chris also took to the same route, although we were in different crews.

We went to the same first school, middle school and high school where we developed our skills and passion for art. This even led us to both going to the same college and studying design.  I was always in the year above Chris because of my age.  It was after we graduated things took a turn.  My obsession for Hip Hop music, scratching and film overtook my passion for design.  Chris how ever got a job in design and fully embraced it.  Through hard work and dedication he worked his way into  top design agencies in London then moving to Bristol where he is now.  From Designing Air Jordan’s, doing such work as the Coca Cola branding for the 2012 Olympics Chris has always maintained his friendship with me.

As I was developing my brand Chris always helped me.  As a Artist and Designer he over took me leaps and bounds.  From the early days, if anyone remembers nu-skratch.com he was behind that.  King of the beats Logo he was behind that.  I’ve stayed loyal to him and as busy as he is, I would rather wait a year to get something from Chris  rather then use someone else.  Recently I have been working again with Chris on some new projects, this prittkalsi website for one.  The other is the return and re brand of KING OF THE BEATS.  We have been working very hard on this.  I shooting the film in NYC and him creating the new look and the artwork to go with it.  We sat down had a number of meetings looking into really applying good design along side to the film and its culture attached.  Next week look out for a new trailer and the first look at Chris’s Work to go with the new look  King of the Beats.

Japans 5th Element Pay a Little Visit

Over a year ago I was contacted by a team from Japan called 5th Element.  Three journalists who have a passion for hip hop culture and using it as a tool to communicate and deliver knowledge to the people of Japan.

Politically and socially motivated, the Team consisting of Keiko Tanaka, Miki Noda and Chieko Tamakawa connected and formed their organization.  One of their events was the Remix Film Festival which was held last year.  I was contacted by Keiko who had seen one of my films.  She was very keen to screen it and asked if I would allow them too.

Chieko who is a very experienced journalist and writer, who’s work has appeared at TED.com, Amnesty International, WIRED.jp and Democracy Now! Japan offered to translate and create Japanese subtitles for my film. Surprisingly this week Chieko made a trip here to the UK this week, She wanted to meet me and do some research towards a new project.  It so happens she caught me on my week off, I was spending it here at home working on my new film.

Sat at my side she assisted me as I produced and put together the trailer for the coming Looking For The Perfect Beat movie.  We took a little break and headed into the city where i shot this piece, introducing her and her group to the UK.

I would like to thank the 5th Element team for there time and support for my work.

Join the Brand, Design a Tee Opportunity – Closing Date Sat August 31st

23821_356050293022_2495104_n

This site is about the creative visual side of Pritt Kalsi and the people around him.  I’m offereing a chance for 3 designers to join the circle and brand.  All you have to do is design a T-Shirt that fits the brief.  The winners of the design’s will have their shirts go into print and will collect 20% of the profits on each shirt sold of their design.

Judged by Pritt Kalsi, Chris Malbon, and special guest judge Aerosol Writer the Artful Dodger. I am looking for designs that can be screen-printed, 2 colours, 3 max.  A mix of good typography, hand drawn and digital.  Something that is appealing to the younger generation yet maintaining the integrity of the brand. Do you think you are the man/woman for the challenge?

The majority of the themes are record collecting and Diggin in the crates, sampling culture.  Drum machines etc.  Think about the king of the beats challenge it self: artists are given £20 /$40 to do look for some records and then go home and make a beat out of them

Slogan’s to think about

Out of control, Who’s gonna take the crate? (the title of the king of the beat s live event)  , you can run but you cant hide …from the classics,  Give the drummer some?  Make it happen! Fakin the Funk, Return of the tech ect.  Your Gonna Get yours.  Maybe you will come up with your own spin or take on words?

We are looking for something of a high standard and very creative.  The t-shirts we are working with are slim fit 1. Charcoal Grey.  2. Heather Military Green 3.  Light Red Tri Blend.

Closing date August Sat 31st : Email your entries to: prittkalsicomp@hotmail.com

The Rebrand – Why ? Behind the times, I think so. Are you a Designer?

217112_10151651004038023_384503401_n

When I was a student, studying design, I was always taught that everything goes round in circles, reverting back to previous trends, that we look to the past to gain inspiration , we just tweak it, revamp, sprinkling a bit of personal flavour, a few added colours  and make it into something new.  I felt the very same applied to Hip Hop music, maybe that’s why I gravitated so much towards it, and later formulated King of the beats.

Sampling culture is like design, taking something from the past, that sound, that groove that you feel drawn towards, taking into that sampler, your canvas stripping it down, thickening it up, what ever. Like a designer you are going to turn it into something new, which is going to be of the now.  Whether its a juggle on 2 turn tables or a beat.  The principles are just the same. The techniques are just different.

Unfortunately I never really fully applied that way of thinking towards my T-shirt designs or graphics.  The generation I came up in, in regards to Hip Hop was tough; we had a very hard core attitude, not really open to much. It was either our way or no way.  I ended up making T-shirts for people of my generation.  A little error on my part as time went on. I never fully explored my potential or really pushed other peoples creativity within my circle.  Watching Chris Malbon develop grow as a designer and watching, and getting know Marley Marls Son Marlon, and Jazzy Jay Son who are involved in the music and culture now. I started to recognize and identify that I was disconnected from the youth or the future flavours.

The kings of the beats events were perfect as they bridged the gap.  We developed a lot on new talents and put people together. Whether they give us the props for that or not.  I always use Italy as a example the work there over a few years, the evidence was there over the 4 years you hear the improvement in the sound especially from those that repeatedly entered. Italy should be proud of a man like Maurizio who shared and understood my vision.

Recently going to events where I’d be seeing people who dress Hip Hop for the weekend.  Claiming to live it and that’s who they are, sounds ridiculous  as you can see it and feel it. you love it, It’s just a part of your life, and that’s fine. What I do and who I am, I do every day.  I want what ever I design to be relevant to somebody everyday, Style played a huge part in Hip Hop, exploited these days, as Busta Rhymes puts it, ‘by people who don’t give a F$£K about it’, but still it was a played a huge fundamental part in the whole ethos of self expression.

Like listening to Tribe Called Quest, I never get bored of ‘Midnight Marauders’. I want to be able to maintain my integrity and message, but improve it and update it visually.  Eric Orr aerosol writer along side Artful Dodger have made that transition and kept up with the times.  Johnny Juice, DJ Disk, Cutmaster Swift and even Diamond D have all also able to move with the times, keep up to date with their craft and still be major players in there field.  This is why I have decided to reinvent my clothing brand, and develop my visual design skills as well as bringing new talent through.

Hence I am announcing a competition to look for new designers of Tees.  To bring into the family and help develop, elevate visually my brand, maintaining foremost the integrity of all my years work.  To help deliver garms that will have the old and young want to rock day in day out.

London Olympics Abbey Stadium Project gets the Royal thumbs up

https://vimeo.com/76586799537607_10150952998483023_854590851_n

2012 I was approached by the Abbey Stadium.  A new building, providing the latest up to date sporting facilities.  In time for the Launch of the London Olympics  and royal visit I was asked to create 3 large pieces ready for the opening day.

I had one week to create the paintings.  Building the frames and prepping the canvas’s.  Painted in Aerosol, I really didn’t know how the Royal Party would take to my work.  Along side my mother who I wanted to share this day.  We was invited to the private opening ceremony where the Queen’s First Cousin the Duke of Kent not only opened the new building but unveiled my work.

I tried to capture a good picture of the Duke, but really that was as happy as he got on the whole visit.

Ultramagnetic M.C’s – Critical Beatdown 25 Years Anniversary London show.

Here is something very special for those who support my work and the band the ‘Ultramagnetic  M.C’s’.

One of the greatest Underground Hip Hop acts of all time. Embarked on a European tour to mark 25 years since the release of their critically acclaimed album ‘Critical Beatdown’.

I have a long history with this group.  In fact the first time I tried to interview them was when they first came to Birmingham City on tour.  In the late 90s when I started working on my Film ‘The Men & Their Music’.  I was introduced to Moe Love by the P-Brothers.  For a couple of years me and Moe spent many hours on the phone, playing each other breaks, beats, talking about music and other stuff.  In 2002 I made a trip to the USA, to start filming the project.  A little nervous as my memories of him was that he looked like the meanest person in hip hop.  In fact he’s one of the coolest.  As a surprise he took me to meet Ced Gee in Harlem and we shot a film. My memories of that meeting Ced wasn’t really into the current state of Hip Hop music, he was involved in other things.  Pursuing his love for Basket Ball. The shoot was very positive.  Ced left with fire in his belly, and I left with amazing footage which lead me to make the film on Paul C.

Returning to the UK I was introduced to Marc Davis from Chicago, who is die hard Ultras fan, so much so he made it his mission to reform the group.  Throughout that whole period I was here in the UK, being played the beats and tracks as they were being made.  Later Marc, TR and Moe he dropped the ‘Ultra Foundation’ Album. It was outstanding LP, possibly the worst hip hop cover of all time but the music was second to none.  Most of that should of been the ‘Best kept Secret’ LP.  I returned to the U.S and shot 2 of the videos for that Album plus a short film introducing TR Loves protege Fred Beanz Later I went onto produce their last single with new M.C, Fred Beanz.

The ironic thing is I will never forget going to Ourprice records in 1988 with Jason Coombes as he brought the cassette never thinking I would later work with the group.

ultrapicIts not been a easy road for the group as you can imagine.  So ofcourse when they contacted me to let me know the tour was on, I had to make sure I got to do something with the group to capture this moment.  Although not a member of the band, I feel a part of their legacy.  Sadly i could not join them for the whole tour due to my work commitments.  I put this together for the group and the fans.  Imagine what I could of done being on the tour.  That would of been one hell of a film.  In the mean time enjoy this.  Look out for the future DJ MOE LOVE ‘DIGGIN IN THE TAPES LP’.  For that project I revamped the original ULTRA Logo.  This was a important and landmark moment for us all.  Filmed by Pritt Kalsi and his team, Andy Higgs and Jay King.  We are available to film / edit shows and events. For further info on costs please feel free to contact us.

Big thanks to : Ced Gee, Tr Love, Kool Keith, Moe Love, Marc Davis & all the Staff at the Grand Clapham Junction, London
